Range Anxiety Put to the Test and Overcome: The Trip Home

We set out from Shuniah on the outskirts to Thunder Bay on Sunday evening Oct 26 so we could enjoy the day with our family and still slice off the first180 km of our return trip.  We had 400km and arrived with 210 km. I charged again at the Ivy charger to 380 km - no issues. On Mon Oct 27, we drove 585 km to Carolyn Beach.  We stopped at White River (200 km) with 150 km - we lost 30 km likely due to the hilly terrain. We charged to 450 km at the Ivy stations in front of the Continental Hotel (50 kwh) - again no issues. We enjoyed brunch in the adjacent restaurant. It's 315 km to Sault Ste Marie and we arrived with about 100 km. In SSM, we charged to 450 km at the amazing Electrify Canada stations at Station Mall and arrived at Carolyn Beach with 330 km - enough for Tuesday's 220km drive to Sudbury where we charged at the Flo station at Southside Chev dealership.   It's 165 km from Sudbury to Parry Sound where we're staying tonight. Charged at the Lakeland stati...

Putting Range Anxiety to the Test: Day 8-All Good

We left Schreiber with 350 km en route to Thunder Bay - 210 km. We arrived in Thunder Bay with 210 km. There are many long uphill stretches between Schreiber and Thunder Bay, which explains why we lost 30 km along the way. In Thunder Bay, we made our way to the Badanai Chev dealership, which has a Flo CCS charger that delivers 50 kwh.  We paid $34 for 48kwh at a rate of $35 per hour. Then we drove to our daughter's home in Shuniah - 40 km east of Thunder Bay. We have 325 km, which will be plenty for our time here. We'll return to Badani to get a full charge before setting out on our return trip on Sunday Oct 26. I'll make a few more posts on our return trip because our itinerary will be somewhat different and a bit shorter. Thanks for reading.

Putting Range Anxiety to the Test: Day 7 - Almost There

We left White River late morning with a healthy 465 km - thanks to the Ivy charger across from the Continental Motel. We planned an easy day of 180 km to the Ivy charger near the Drifters Motel in Terrace Bay. Like other drivers, we found that 0064 worked but not 0054. We arrived with 270 km (we used a bit extra to enjoy the heat in the car for part of the journey). $14.08 for 20.4 kwh at $0.69 and topped up to 370 km. While we were there, two other evs pulled in. One left when she couldn't get 0054 to work. The other pulled in when we were leaving. So that's 3 evs per hour - not sure how typical that is. We are staying the night 10 km closer to Thunder Bay at The Voy Motel. So we have 360 km for the 210 km trip to Thunder Bay. Temperature today was around 8C, a bit chilly in the car. The heated seats and steering wheel help a lot and didn't seem to suck any kms. Also we bought a heated lap blanket that plugs into the lighter and doesn't seem to use kms. However, later ...

Putting Range Anxiety to the Test: Day 6 - An Oasis in the EV Desert

We left Sault Ste Marie with 455 km and drove 325 km to White River. We arrived with 120 km. We noticed that we picked up a few km on the many long descents on Highway 17, which compensated for the kms we lost on the many climbs! The Ivy charger at The Continental Hotel was working and we  charged to 475 km in 45 min at $0.69/kwh for a total of $40.77. We are taking some time to enjoy the region and will only travel 180 km tomorrow and charge in Terrace Bay. If the two Ivy chargers at the Drifters Motel are working, we should have no problem reaching our final destination of Thunder Bay on Oct 22 (Day 8)/200 km. Obviously, if you want to travel faster than we are doing and/or if the weather iss colder, you will likely find the trip more challenging.  I also forgot to mention that when we charged yesterday at the Electrify Canada chargers at Station Mall in Sault Ste Marie, we received a notice when charging was done and an alert that after 2 minutes "idle time", we would...

Putting Range Anxiety to the Test: Days 4+5 - Hanging Out

We arrived in Sault Ste Marie on Friday Oct 17 and spent two days visiting with our friend Helena and taking the 8 hour trip on the train to the Agawa Canyon. Amazing. Do it if/when you get the chance. So no need to charge. We charged tonight at the Electrify Canada posts (4 of them) at Station Mall. Very fast at $0.60 per kwh. Fully charged to 460 km. So we're ready to head to White River tomorrow - 325 km. We'll stay on the Continental Hotel Reports indicate that only one of two Ivy chargers working. Fingers crossed. Worst case, we'll trickle charge till we have enough to get to the Ivy chargers in Terrace Bay - 180 km away. Thanks for reading and sending good karma our way.

Putting Range Anxiety to the Test: Day 3 - not so easy peasy!

We spent the night in Magnetawan. We arrived with 170km and boosted that to 200km with an overnight trickle charge. We drove 10km to the municipal offices in Magnetawan and used the Lakeland fast charger there - charged to 400km at 140 kwh for 0.62 per kwh. Fantastic. In Sudbury, we pulled into the PetroCanada on Regent Street only to find that the credit card readers on both chargers had been vandalized and were unusable. We called PetroCanada and were put on hold for 20 minutes. So we abandoned that option and headed to the Flo charger at the Southside GMC dealer - slow at 50 kwh, so we headed to the Salute Café across the road and enjoyed a delicious lunch. Charging is pricey at 0.55/min. $37.48 for 50 kwh -an additional 200 km. We left Sudbury with 440km - enough for the 310 km trip to Sault Ste Marie. However, we stopped in Blind River (165 km) to try the Ivy charger at the Tim Horton's. Tim's was under renovation and the entrance was fenced off. However, construction work...

Putting Range Anxiety to the Test: Day 2 - Easy Peasy

Day 2: Easy Peasy Lots of charging options between Kingston and Lake Cecebe (just south of Parry Sound). Yesterday I left Kingston with 435 km and arrived in Toronto with 170 km. I charged up to 400 km at the Shell station on Richmond St E (3 CCS chargers) in Toronto and went on to Barrie arriving with 275 km. I stayed there overnight, charged to 380 km at Zehr's (Park + Charge: 4 CCS chargers at 0.41/kwh) in the morning and drove to Lake Cecebe. The car has 175 km and I will trickle charge overnight to have 200 km, which is plenty to make the 80 km trip to Parry Sound where I plan to charge to 450 km. I am optimistic that I can make it to Sault Ste Marie (465 km) with a charge in Sudbury. I’ll post an update from Sault Ste Marie.
